A smile cost nothing but means so much!

PS: This is a shared listed article

“Wow,” I said aloud as I watched Mello make a thirty footer to tie the game. “The Knicks can do it,” I told myself, “they can beat the Celtics. 10 minutes left, plenty of time,” were my internal cheers.

Then, worse than the sound of a game ending buzzer, my blackberry made a noise.
Instinctually, I answered and, despite the fact the Knicks just threw the ball away, I was pleased to hear the voice of a good friend, although her voice inflection seemed down. Eight forty left on the game clock.

“Hey, what’s up?” I soon understood her voice’s message. To summarize, one of her best friends, a very successful professional woman, had, like millions of others, fallen victim to clinical depression. Over the course of a year, her life had fallen apart. Divorce, a loss JOB, avoiding friends-the story is familiar to most mental health professionals. I was now listening attentively and I could hear the sadness and frustration in my friend’s words. She finished on the hope I could give her some advice on how to help her depressed friend,

I took a ten second mental time- out to remind myself that her dilemma is common. Statistics alone would tell you that there is a good chance you have faced, or will face the same challenge-help a friend when they are depressed. I also knew that despite good intentions, most people are ineffective in this daunting task.

In the next second, my course was clear. I broke the silence “listen, get a piece of paper. I am going to giving you some tips for helping your depressed friend. I want you to write them down so you will be more aware of them.”

While she searched for a pen, I went to my nearby bookshelf and found what I was looking for: Contagious Emotions: Staying well when your love one is depressed, by Ronald Podell, M.D. Dr. Podell is a practicing psychiatrist in Los Angeles and the leading expert in helping individuals effectively cope with the depression of their loved ones. I knew his tips would help my friend. It was easy to find what I was looking for, as I had referenced the book many times.

“Ready?”
“Go ahead,” she said.

First, I will tell you what NOT to do-you certainly don’t want to inadvertently make it worse:
1. Don’t try to be strong for your friend by telling him to “pull yourself up by your bootstraps and be tough.” Watch what you say despite your good intentions because you will tend to say the wrong thing many times and be discouraging.
2. Don’t get so involved and frustrated by your friend’s seeming lack of optimism and confidence that you wind up arguing with your friend–especially about what he should and should not do.
3. Do not join your depressed friend in his depression–remember that depression is contagious and that your friend’s feelings are not your feelings.

I told her to keep those tips near her phone so when she spoke to her friend, she’d have a reminder.
Now write down What To Do:
1. Maintain warm, caring relationship free from hostility and tension
2. Learn to cope with the hardships that relating frequently with a depressed person can impose such as the tendency to be lured into destructive criticism and arguments about your friend’s passivity.
3. Learn what depression is–a clinical disorder that is not something someone turns “on” or “off” and may be triggered by an event but becomes a brain chemistry disorder separate from that event.
I told her to keep these tips next to her phone too and that she should immediately go to amazon and order a copy of Contagious Emotions: Staying well when your loved one is depressed, by Ronald Podell.

She thanked me for listening, for helping her feel better — I was applying many of Dr. Podell’s tips-and said she would order the book as soon as we hung up.”
“Take care,” were my final words.

Then it hit me-I was now looking at a rerun of The A Team. I may have helped my friend, but I would have to settle for Knick-Celtic ESPN highlights. Not fair. In the next few seconds, I find out the Knicks lost at the buzzer-a great game, and I missed it. I try to help a friend, and I get screwed. So not fair,” ran my thoughts. I started to feel depressed-but I knew what to do.

I reached for my blackberry, got information, “Operator, in Los Angeles, Dr. Ronald Podell, he is a psychiatrist…hurry up!”

For a priceless smile…..

Some days, it’s easy to smile. You wake up to the sounds of birds chirping, with the warm glow of the morning sun cradling your face. You take several deep, cleansing breaths standing beneath a perfectly cascading shower, just before drawing a smiley face on the steamed-up glass with your index finger.

Your roommate or significant other makes your coffee, just the way you like it. You hit every traffic light. You sing to your favorite tunes. And you arrive at work refreshed, excited, and anxious to create and collaborate.

But not every day starts this way. Sometimes you wake up to chaos, in your head or in the world around you. You hit snags, and bumps, and roadblocks at every turn. You try too hard, or don’t try enough, and things fall apart, or things fall short.

You struggle, you fight yourself and other people, and you find yourself wishing you could stop the world so you could get off for a while.

But there is an alternative. When things go wrong, you can fall down or look up. You can shut down or wake up, all over again, starting from right where you stand. You can accept that the days won’t always look bright, but commit to finding something worth smiling about. Not sure what that might be? No worries, friends! I have a few ideas….

1. Call a friend who knows how to laugh at herself to remember what it’s like not to take yourself too seriously.

2. Ask a friend to come over and make you smile. It’s really simple and obvious, I know, but sometimes we forget to just ask for what we need.

3. Read a letter, card, or email from someone who thought of you when you were going through a hard time.

4. Search your deleted email folder for “thank you.” You probably made a huge difference in someone’s life recently—remember that now!

5. Text a friend, “What’s the funniest thing you’ve heard today?”

6. Text your significant other with a silly picture of you and ask for one in return.

7. Ask your significant other to make you breakfast in bed—and to be creative with it. (I have no idea what that could mean, but just seeing the thought s/he puts into it will likely make it extra fun).

8. Post on your Facebook page, “What made you smile today?” (Like I often do on the Tiny Buddha Facebook page!)

9. Tell a child in your life that you need a hug. Just try to stay stoic when she throws her little arms around your neck and sings “The Sun Will Come out Tomorrow.”

10. Alternatively, ask that child to draw a picture of you and him or her together.

Mia – Inspiring the heart!

Theme : Journey from ‘OR’ to ‘AND’ Your story of how you took charge of life and made a choice, not a compromise. When you refused to choose one thing OR the other, and instead followed your heart. useyourand-blogadda This a story of a close one who stood up the odds and is a person of determination and inspiration to all the young ones out there. She could be the story of the neighbor, daughter, wife or someone you know walking across you. Here she is Mia to connect with you.
When Mia was born her parents were over whelmed with having a baby girl in their arms. Just as to every parent their child is special Mia was their favourite but being a year younger to all her batch mates she found it difficult to cope up with the pressure right since a little girl in school. Her parents were told by the principal that it was a mistake to admit her a year earlier cause she wasn’t mentally prepared to face the challenges that life has in store for it. But who were they to judge a little girls outlook and mental power for just being a year younger. She wouldn’t complete her homework and neither was actively a part of the class. She was all by herself cause her teachers thought she’s slow and not that she needed that extra care and attention. Somehow she fought the odds and coped up in school. She turned out to be the best anchor and an all rounder in sports and studies otherwise. Stood 1st in the SSC Exam on state level. Topped in another 2 subjects that everybody thought she was weak at. She was a matter of talk amongst her peers. But she was simply smiling as she met principal who once judged that the little Mia would “never cope up in life”. All those memories just flashed across. She went to the top most university college and graduated as a highly qualified engineer with a post in an MNC. Little things that make who you are!

Theme :  Things that define me

Every woman has some things that she is passionate about, things that make her who she is. Tell us about the things that are important to you, the multitude of things that make you who you are, because you can’t be limited by one label.

useyourand-blogadda

I am an IT Engineer by profession. I am deeply passionate about what I do from my studies to work to all the little things in between i do it whole – heartedly otherwise i don’t do it at all. If you don’t love what you do, you’re probably not going to be motivated to go above and beyond, to innovate and to stand out in the workplace. But if you’re passionate about your career, it will make putting time and effort into it pleasurable, not a chore.

I don’t believe in being perfect. Its wasting time and energy trying to be “perfect” that will only leads to unhappiness. We all know we can’t do everything well all the time. Beating yourself up for your perceived flaws will only dampen your abilities at work, not to mention your mental health. We each, if we’re lucky, will have our chance to leave a mark on the world, but we are trying too hard to be perfect. So don’t emulate Wonder Woman, think about what’s wonderful to you instead. Then boldly, audaciously, joyfully, leave the rest behind and see how it falls in place with immense satisfaction to the soul.

I am not afraid to take risks. There was a time i did but it just lead to even more disappointment and regret than i wish i would have. I realized it requires the ability to stop playing it safe every once in awhile and just don’t make reckless decisions, but know how to take a calculated amount of risk involved.

They know that their to-do lists will never be completed, and they’re okay with that. Sometimes you can be more productive by accepting that you’re simply not going to get everything done. Learning to let go of certain goals, responsibilities and tasks can be difficult, but freeing.

No woman’s success happens in a vacuum. Wildly successful women acknowledge those that support them every day — both in their home lives and at the office. And that graciousness not only makes them better people, but fosters loyalty from their employees.

The pressure put on women in today’s society is immense and I admire any female out there who won’t let the high demands and expectations get them down. In my experience, I have learned that we, as women, should not let the likes of “perfected” images or “criticism” affect us and It has came as such a relief to me to realize that being different and imperfect is far more interesting than being a “perfect” person. I believe that being yourself and feeling happy as yourself- just the way you are signifies the word “beauty.”

We were all blessed with voices to use them- so use them! I’m a relatively quiet person and a woman of not many words who next to never will indulge in small talk chit chat. It’s just who I am. However, on the other hand, when it comes to standing up for what I believe in or voicing my opinions on things, I never fail to make use of my voice. And neither shall you! Make use of what god has given you and say what you think, say what you believe in, and argue against what you don’t.

Living by your morals and values in life; inspires you, motivates you and energizes you for doing something significant in the world. As children, we were always being told to be a person of moral and were educated to understand what our values are. I think, when we grow older we seem to loose or forget about those crucial qualities and in order for us to be descent human beings, we should consider re-educating ourselves on morals and values.

Follow your heart…never give up…and you can do anything. We all have the ability to do whatever it is we want to do and fulfill any dream we want to fulfill; we just have to go and do it. When you find your passion in life, it creates a meaning in your life and gives you a purpose in the world: it generates happiness.

Re-do my lil Den!

From new year to holi and from diwali to christmas, every month throughout the year is buzzing with so many festivities. And festivities to me means a time of love, joy, happiness and celeberation together. Alot of new memories in the making, planning and celeberating the togetherness of good times and sharing those smiles and laughter with so much of enthusiasm with my closed ones.

2years back i had to move away from home, as my job being a banker demanded a temporary shift for sometime. Staying as a paying guest with a colleague of mine at Uncle Jim’s house had a huge restriction list to follow…yeah like literally…no coming home late after 9pm, no boozing, no guy friends over, no loud music, no pets n blah blah. We as the ones in need of shelter in the middle of the year had to abide and follow the rules but six months later when there was pretty enough money in the kitty we decided to shift out and rent a place nearby to our workplace. The best part was it was a broker who we knew so he got it done in cheap within no time. It’s been a year and a half now that we haven’t got the place renovated but this time we thought of something different as my parents would be visiting bangalore and the place im living in ofcourse, at the end of the year. I couldn’t afford an interior decorator as it would burn a big hole in my pocket with my taste clashing on the smallest thing they would suggest making changes on so i instantly opened up my laptop and hit the makemyhome.com site that a friend on blogadda referred to me. I was in such awe to find a variety of so many things right from furniture to decorative items for my shelf and from glass door film to crockery for the kitchen it had my eyes so fixed on it. So here’s what i did picking up 3 main things that would dominate and give an uplift to my otherwise boring just a house to make a home to live in! From Ethnic, Contemporary, Minimalistic, Casual, Chic, High-Tech, Retro and more , I chose for something minimalistic yet contemporary!

Let me describe my little den to you firstly, It’s a 1BHK on the top most floor of the building with the entrance door when opened up faces a wall with a huge mirror on it as i feel it is a must to see yourself in it while entering and leaving the house to feel good about the way you look and just incase you don’t miss on any accessories complementing your attire for the day in a hurry. While you take a left a narrow passage with dim lights and a mini chandelier leads you to the main living room. My living room is painted in off white as dad had once said light colors up the wall would make even a small space look so spacious.

1.ABS Wall Clock – Pan011

Now for the walls up the living room right above the TV Cabinet set i chose this beautiful wall clock that is so multi colored and vibrant with all the otherwise solid color work done dominating my living area. They say that the true value of time is to snatch, seize, and enjoy every moment of it. No idleness, no laziness, no procrastination and never put off till tomorrow what you can do today. We must use time wisely and forever realize that the time is always ripe to do right. This clock is an artifact that spells perfection and enigma and surely decorates the wall it is hung on to. The colors on it being red for love, blue for calm, yellow for cheerful, green for delight and white for peace make a perfect blend of color blocking on the walls my house. A perfect piece to remind me how fast life is ticking and i hope not to blink and miss it so be on the go for it.

2. Swayam Diwan set, (Set of 6 Pcs) – DWN16-3002

For am not the type having large sofas occupying spaces as it looks so formal instead a diwan to lay back and lie down with cushions surrounding all over so that i can hug one and punch two, roll over and sleep when anxious or have them all as a defence wall like a safeguard incase i would fall off from my sleep. From the one end of the wall i have a big hanging lamp from the ceiling left loose and sets a perfect ambience on a cold night to curl up on d diwan and read a novel, leave the windows open and fall off to sleep with a cold breeze brushing through my feet. They say “You cry and you scream and you stomp your feet and you shout. You say, ‘You know what? I’m giving up, I don’t care.’ And then you go to bed and you wake up and it’s a brand new day, and you pick yourself back up again.” That’s exactly how i want it to be and this dark maroon color diwan set just gives it such an ethnic feeling with those beautiful prints on it. I must recommend this to like minded people like me.

3.  The Yellow Door Nesting Table (Set Of 3)

You do not need to leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen. Do not even listen, simply wait, be quiet still and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked, it has no choice, it will roll in ecstasy at your feet.
Any time women come together with a collective intention, it’s a powerful thing. Whether it’s sitting down making a quilt, in a kitchen preparing a meal, in a club reading the same book, or around the table playing cards, or planning a birthday party, when women come together with a collective intention, magic happens. This dark brown wooden side table rested on a side across the bedroom would be the best thing to keep my laptop, rest a photo frame or keep all the necessary items i would want to carry along without forgetting it while hurrying up. Moreover the small one is 11.5 x 9.75 x 11 Inch and would get delivered within 5-6 days by the makemyhome.com site which is so quick and reasonable in the end. No running around or hiring helps to fix it or anything! Perfect!

MOMO and JOMO

Technology is one such important aspect of one’s life in the present world that it is so difficult to survive without it. From the time it has been coined and discovered everybody is in favour of it so much so that you feel left out and neglected if you don’t get to log in to ur favourite social site and check constant updates and notifications about it….who’s doing what? How happening is the other friend’s life? What is the new trend? So many thoughts in that tiny little brain of our’s that even though we complain we have no time for ourselves, can’t do widout networking can we? And there come’s MOMO ( The mystery of missing out) when updates from that social bee on our friend’s list seems missing for sometime not wandering if the friend might br in trouble instead maybe life is more happening at the other end and am missing on being involved in it more. Whereas, JOMO (The joy of missing out) is when ur the one who is happy and away for good…ever imagined u don’t really do anything and still have people talking about you all the time without even making a statement or an appearance to give them a piece to talk but they still won’t stop blabbering about you and making your soooo simpleee lifee…ohhh sooo complicated sound like with all those rumours and controversies doing the round that you end up being so frustrated and just feel like running away  somewhere far off away from the hulabaloo of social life and want to scream out loud saying…just leave me alone for once…annoying but it does happen at times n daz wen you feel like missing out from that social circle for good to enjoy having your own me time with no unwanted talks to disturb.

Venice Pop-up!

It’s been a long year that she had stayed without him for so long…Apart from the chats and late night video call’s she didn’t really get to see him that often in the good old day’s that used to be, hanging around and fooling with each other all the time. It’s been  few year’s from the time they started dating as college friend’s, from their first fresher’s party to the prom night dance, to those camping and fun treks of being supportive and understanding of each other….she knew him more than he would have known himself and had faith that everything would work out well in the long run. When they first met, they were so hot blooded and hated enemies of each other that they couldn’t even stand each other in the same classroom corridor for no good reason but their attitude was so opposite that everything they did was under a total competition spirit. Being so competitive they were made to work in the same team and with no choice they started to know each other as time went by. Like chalk and cheese they were so difficult to understand but when they started blending it was an amazing sight to see. She was an introvert to an extent and him the total opposite. So many laugh’s, fight’s, tear’s, sorrow’s and joy they’ve shared. It’s been more than 6 year’s college has come to an end. Everybody eventually graduated and started settling in their life of their own but these two love bird’s have had quite a few ups and down but still managed to stayed strong, as time passed by their love for each other felt even more real and strong. It wasn’t just a college phase or teenage romance for them but a lifelong hand-in-hand companionship they wanted to take a plunge at without awaiting any longer.

Love-Wallpapers-love-33002134-1920-1200

Nissa, Jaden and me have been the closest of friends and I’ve seen them love and grow even in those distance long difficult times. She works as an executive head with a marketing company and he is abroad working as project head with a MNC. Last week he called me up to tell me that it’s finally time that he rings the bell with her but before that he wanted to have a romantic getaway to pop the million dollar question before her with that moment that would be engraved in the history of their live’s eventually. She’s more the die-hard romantic one’s but he isn’t so he asked me to plan a surprise for her that she wouldn’t have even imagined (I played cupid to them even when they met).

I tried surfing through so many travel site’s that I eventually was about to give up as planning someone’s lifelong loving moment was not an easy task I could do so swiftly. And then I landed up on skyscanner with all that I had in mind to just shot up and execute half of my problems about travel and booking that were completely sorted in no time with a budget of about 1,00,000/- I had been offered by skyscanner for a trip I so wanted to make this as the best gift for my two besties and  as a romantic getaway thought of Venice as the perfect location. He would travel on the second day directly so I had to bring her there without giving her a hint on what would be ahead planned once we reach there, so I did the flight and the hotel booking for the both of us i.e. me and her, yes I had to go along to see if it was all on track.

Picture1

Skyscanner helped me to cross check the prices and comfort of travelling in the flights I preferred with either halts or direct locations I wanted to go by with time and availability preference which came upto 48,723/- including the return tickets.

Picture2

The hotel booking too had to be in a place nearby as we hardly had two nights and the fact that we were there we did have quite a few visits in the nearby places to be done. For a 2 nights stay it costed about 26,679/-

Picture2

For sightseeing i booked a car to travel to those historic yet romantic places and that added to another 10,080/-

Flight Booking for 2 persons : Rs  48,723/-

Hotel Booking : Rs 26,679/-

Hiring a Car : Rs 10,080/-

TOTAL :  Rs 85,482/-

BIG SAVE OF Rs 14,518/- out of the 1,00,000/- budget given.

Now, before He could land with a royal hero entry to woo the lady of his dreams these were the places i thought of visiting  :

The Doge’s Palace

The Doge’s Palace is the most outstanding civilian monument of Venice but it is also a monument of which the architecture is extraordinary in Europe by its originality.

Indeed when you approach by the lagoon, the best way for a first contact, we were struck by what the architects call an “inversion of masses”.

6088415-Doge_Venice

Campanile di San Marco, Venice

A work of art and architecture, the bell tower of San Marco stands right in front of the church on Piazza San Marco. The “Campanile”, as it is most often referred to by the Venetians, is an outstanding landmark of Venice. Standing at almost 100 meters high it is hard to miss it once at the square. Unlike the Basilica, its simple brick structure makes it unique while standing out from other structures.

6088357-View_from_the_top_of_the_Campanile_Venice

Churches, Venice

This lovely little church filled with the heavy smell of incense is to be found just a few steps from the San Polo end of the famous Ponte Rialto. Allegedly, the first church to stand on this site dated to the 5th century and so it would make it Venice’s oldest church.

6603248-San_Barnaba_Venice

Cafe Florian, Venice

I wanted to order a Bellini, which came with olives and canapes – as expected but- for the experience of sitting outside one of the most famous and oldest cafes in Italy, in one of the most famous squares in the world, when the crowds had gone home (well at least to their next location/ cruise ship etc) and the lights were reflecting off the waters that had seeped into the square, and music from the orchestras was drifting overhead – it would be worth every euro!!!

3159289-Cafe_Florian_Venice

Gondole, gondoliere, traghetti, Venice

As I walked around Venice, I spotted many gondolas gliding along the canals. One night, when it was dark, I could hear what I thought was a recorded song coming from the canal, it was on closer inspection a gondolier singing as he rowed along- it was quite atmospheric, as his voice echoed around the narrow canal in the dark. I also heard an accordian being played that night. This old transport possibility on the waterways of the city is an attraction for all the visitors of it.
Many travellers have the desire to hear a song when they lie tranquil in the gondola. The gondolier drives the traditional boat along the narrow canals, and sings for the guests.

6755771-Gondola_Not_Black_Venice_May_2013_Venice

Scala Contarini del Bovolo, Venice

Scala del Bovolo literally translated means “snail-shell stairway”. The marvelous open stairway is the reason for the Contarini family palace to be called Palazzo Contarini dal Bovolo. The palace itself, designed by Giovanni Candi, was built in 15th and 16th centuries and it is mostly Gothic in style. However, the stairway tower designed probably by Giorgio Spavento is fully Renaissance work.

Food, wine and sweets, Venice

The Jewish comunity is big in Venice, and around the old Ghetto area there are a lot of shops offering Kosher food. This bakery attracted our sense with the color of the windows and the smell of the sugary goodies they were baking.  I had to try their tiny pizzette di sfoglia and a variety of their cookies. The ones with almond were exceptional.

And it would Finally happen when we were to stand on the Rialto Bridge  located at the center of Venice and is one of the bridges that span the Grand Canal. There are three walkways on the bridge comprising of two along the outer balustrades and a wider central walkway which leads to some charming shops,

I-amsterdam

From the last two weeks my mom has been yelling at me to clear the mess in my room, the paper cuttings that i just scatter around without being bothered to pick them up once my work is done, the coffee mug and vessels that i don’t wash after using them and how it seems like a pig was staying in my room if a stranger had to enter….So many complaints from her and am tired of not improving as usual….Putting up the radio in full volume and adding a scoop of cold vanilla ice cream to the hot cappuccino with those experimenting with the food that i do i start sipping slowly from the cup, flipping the travel magazine pages and admiring how beautiful these exotic locations look only if i had the chance to go visit them in a world of fantasy of my own, as i switch on the wi-fi router my mail beeps and i read about how skyscanner would give me the opportunity to travel to a place i would wish to within a budget of 1,00,000/-…I couldn’t even think twice before i started typing A…AM….AMSTERDAM.

610_fullimage_amsterdam koninklijkpaleis vrede-op-gevel.jpg_560x350

3yrs back when my family took off for a vacation to South Africa I had board exams to give that were so crucial more than me for them that for the entire 4 months i had books all around me right from sleeping to eating on the dining table that even the word of vacations by me were given such an awkward look at home. At that time i had this huge travel scrapbook tearing out holiday pics from magazine and newspaper and sticking it in which slowly began to excite me and want to know more about these destinations when i would have the opportunity to travel there by myself

Time is a luxury, and it’s one we’re often short of when we travel.

There were so many places i wish i could put a magic wand upon and make it true to all those out of boundary regions i had in mind but amsterdam would make me alot more comfortable. A cousin of mine was studying there for 2 years and on her trip back she was so chirpy about the entire scenario like i could actually imagine myself there in it. Amsterdam is one of top visitor destinations and deservedly so, is one of Europe’s smallest capitals, lends itself well to whistle-stop tours thanks to its compact city center and excellent public transit . If I had just 3 days to see it all, this is how I’d pack the most of Amsterdam into a nutshell like  a personalized tour for the time-constrained, from the wonders of the 17th-century Low Countries to modern Dutch life.

I immediately would have logged onto the site and booked the tickets landing to the city in the morning without wanting to miss a thing from the time i stepped in cause all i had was 3days and a huge to-do list that if i wouldn’t complete i would have regretted for the rest of my sulking how being there i could have missed it?

Picture1

Skyscanner my all in one travel guide helped me sort out most of the travelling part and how to go about it with all the comapring done with just a simple click instantly….I booked thru and fro tickets for a 3 day stay that came upto Rs. 59,302/-

Picture2

Next i wanted to book a hotel which should have been right at the centre of the city so i instantly typed my preference and chose the Swissotel Amsterdam that was famous to the adjacent dam square and barely 20 mins from the airport located at the heart of the city.A 3 night stay costed me 13,710/- minus the tax part which was still good.

To move about in the city i first thought of getting a bicycle to just roam about pedalling across the street (i like the fantasy part of it) but then rent-a-car option on skyscanner seemed so preferable so i opted for a chevrolet car that would take me around the citywith a much reliable local driver who would know the directions faster than me that again added a 6,043.12/- to the budget being planned out.

Things that i made a list of for a 72 hour sight seeing most of it was:

 Amsterdam Canal Cruises

No visitor should miss out on a water-borne tour of the splendid canals of Amsterdam. A cruise on Amsterdam’s canals is a must for any first-time visitor. By doing this early in my trip i would get a great perspective of the city. This was a maximum experience in Amsterdam. It brings you down the Canals to show you the hidden life of Amsterdam city. This had to be a must do on my list. While any canal tour will be an experience to remember, the options are plentiful: hop aboard an open-top boat  or a special themed or catered tour.

The Rijksmuseum (National Museum)

The Rijksmuseum hosts an impressive collection of paintings from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Including works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Frans Hals, and more! Most famous is Rembrandt’s masterpiece the Night Watch. The museum is being renovated and will reopen completely in April 2013. In the meantime, 400 masterpieces from the 17th century Dutch Golden Age are on show daily from 9 am to 6 pm.

Leiden Square (Leidseplein)

Planning a night out in Amsterdam? Head down to Leiden Square (Leidseplein,) which is known as the center of nightlife where you can choose from hundreds of bars, clubs, restaurants and discos that would suit every style and taste.

Anne Frank House (Anne Frankhuis)

A Museum with a Story. Visit the hiding place where Anne Frank wrote her diary during the Second World War. For more than two years, Anne Frank lived secretively with the other people in hiding in the back part of her father’s office building at # 263 Prinsengracht.

Red Light District

If you are a bit worried about going out and about in the Red Light district … don’t be.

All manner of humanity can be found there and it’s harmless. You will see mothers with children, grandmothers and grandfathers, along with prostitutes behind glass, tourists, all living together just fine.  If you’re from a big city you might have to have someone point it out to you because during the day it looks like any other part of Amsterdam, just older.

AMSTERDAM-CANAL-NIGHT

Van Gogh Museum

Amsterdam promises just as much for lovers of modern art: its most-visited museum, the Van Gogh Museum , is a tribute to the post-impressionist painter whose inventive technique and sympathetic subject matter has earned him countless admirers. Its recently re-opened for another temporary exhibit despite its renovation, is another can’t-miss destination for modern art enthusiasts; its Erezaal (“Hall of Honor”) is bedecked with classic canvases from Henri Matisse, Piet Mondrian, Yves Klein and other celebrated artists.

The Jordaan

This charming neighborhood is Amsterdam’s Greenwich Village, with its narrow alleys, leafy canals lined with 17th-century houses, quirky specialty shops, cafes and designer boutiques.

Rembrandtplein

One of Amsterdam’s main squares, this is an ideal place to sit on one of the many terraces and watch the world go by.

I really do hope this much awaited dream in my thoughts does come soon with the help of my now all time favourite travel guide partner Skyscanner!

Y is black not a color?

I happened to watch the news sometime back about people debating over Black not being a color? So strange it was that it made me think what if the color black didin’t exist then white would not have existed and how would other colors get a definition to them if black wouldn’t be a source to it hmmm think think???

On the movement scale, black is a very still, bold color.Women like me seem more attached to black than any other color in their wardrobe. If I told you that pink’s not your color—or yellow, or orange—you might be open to the idea. But black?

Yes. Black.

And I think that idea doesn’t freak women out because black makes them look and feel amazing and black seems like a safe standby whenever you doubt what to wear. You just try removing those black clothes off your wardrobe and you’ll find a big hole in there without knowing what to replace it with??

When i have exams that go on for more than a month and am sitting at home studying for them without any physical activity happening as such, i tend to gain those extra calories and wish to hide it off only below a black kaftan top or dress and am so sure it would work for so many of you out there in the same way…Black is ideal at times without a second thought indeed!

The 5 Black things i would wish for among the thousand other wishes i could have are:

1. TALL WIRE BIRDCAGE

TALL WIRE BIRDCAGE

Birds are cute, Birds are chirpy..they can make anyone happy. The last i had was a parrot named Piu in a blue cage in my balcony. It was fun waking up early playing and feeding it before i left for daily work. The recent one’s my sister gifted me last month are a pair of cute love birds.Usually, birds get scared and anxious if they’re too low. If they’re up higher than eye level, they’ll take it as a sign that they are superior to their owners. If they’re even higher, they will feel isolated from the people below. Many birds love attention and would be bored and lonely in an empty, unused room but if my birdcage was in the center of a room, my birds would feel anxious and scared, as they have nowhere to hide from danger. Birds need at least one side of their cage up against a wall, as it provides them with a feeling of security hence i would wish this tall wire birdcage against the wall for them.

2. MULBERRRY WALTER BRIEFCASE

Mulberry Briefcase
MULBERRY WALTER BRIEFCASE

A sleek and stylish briefcase crafted from oak soft saddle leather with enough space … This single briefcase could carried in the hand. … Soft Saddle Shoulder. The black mulberry briefcase is what i wish for and who said only men carry it around? I do. The Single Briefcase highlights understated practicality. Designed to be slim and unassuming, finished with minimal hardware for a timeless leather accessory. It features a simple top handle and a secure lock to the front. Carefully-organised interior space has room for technology and documents. Mulberry’s Walter briefcase would be a smart way for me to stay stylish on the go.

3. A  BLACK SHIP SAILING BY MY NAME

“I can’t control the wind but I can adjust the sail.”
― Ricky Saggs

BLACK SHIP
BLACK SHIP

From every night in my dreams I see you, I feel you and that is how I know you…go on. I wish like titanic i had a ship built in my name…how mesmerizing the thought of itself could be…What I would really love is to hang over the edge and watch the bow of the ship slice through the waves. I would have loved it especially when the waves would be high and the ship rose and fell, or when it was snowing and the flakes stung on my face. Sailing on a black ship by my name carved on it would be the best feeling ever.

4. A BLACK STAR CEILING

A BLACK STAR CEILING
A BLACK STAR CEILING

A Fibre optic star ceiling is a definite plus for any home theatre or bedroom and i definitely want to have one. They are great to view in almost any light. When there are lights off in the room… the fiber optics are visible and beautiful. When the lights are on… they are still visible and beautiful. And, you can even make them twinkle. You can have a realistic looking Milky Way in your mural, that has a cloudy look to it and has thousands and thousands of tiny little stars.

5. A HUGE WALL SIZED CROSS

“Before we can begin to see the cross as something done for us, we have to see it as something done by us.”

A CROSS
A CROSS

A firm believer in the christian faith….I pray whole heartedly to the Lord, My God everyday. Keeping him the centre of my life…I know he will protect me day and night.

I wish to have a wall sized cross in black for my white painted wall in the living room cause i start my day touching the foot of the cross and surrender my day to the Almighty Lord, before i resign off to sleep i thank him for blessing me.

Any colour would do – so long as it’s black

If you read the title of the post carefully, you’ll notice that it sounds familiar….maybe you’ve heard it or seen it somewhere?? Its those famous line published in Sir Henry Ford’s autobiography My Life and Work (1992) when he was quoted saying “Any customer can have a car painted any colour that he wants so long as it is black”

In times of fear and uncertainty black contains the energy of the threatening unknown. In a positive state, black is seen as a restful emptiness into which anything may emerge and disappear once again. It is also mysterious, providing a sense of potential and possibility. Black is the absorption of all color and the absence of light. Black hides, while white brings to light. What black covers, white uncovers. We all use black at various times to hide from the world around us in one way or another. Some of us use it to hide our weight; others among us use it to hide our feelings, our fears or our insecurities.People who like black may be conventional, conservative and serious, or they may think of themselves as being sophisticated or very dignified.

The color black is often seen as a color of sophistication, as in ‘the little black dress’ or ‘the black tie event’. Affluent and success orientated women often choose black as it can give an impression of elegance, sophistication and confidence.

Black is the end, but the end always implies a new beginning. When the light appears, black becomes white, the color of new beginnings.

“Think of what starlight

And lamplight would lack

Diamonds and fireflies

If they couldn’t lean against Black. . . .”

― Mary O’Neill, Hailstones and Halibut Bones

Right from the television set to my music system, laptop, blackberry, bag, shoes and watches i have them all in black somehow….i remember mom used to complain whenever i was out shopping for those blue faded color jeans or my side sling bag for daily usage that “beta, black mein le lo agar mehla hua toh jaldi dikhega bhi nahi” (take whatever your taking in black cause if it get’s dirty, nobody will notice it soon). Funny, but i think from those days itself whatever i opted for would have black as the main dominant color in it. There was this happy green neon color phase that i was infatuated with but it really didn’t last that long cause black is the ultimate for me.

Even though i do posses quite a few things in black the list would be unending, if i had to complete all those black things i really needed but for now these are few of the things i really wish for in black ofcourse:

1. BLACK BEATLES HOODIE

Firstly, I might just sound like another Beatles Fan but I badly wish for this cause i really don’t have one and it’s black and the beatles and i can keep saying that again and again like a big ardent fan of their’s cause here’s the thing you have to understand about the beatles is the fact that they were THE FIRST, yes THE VERY FIRST.

Before the beatles everything sounded like… nothing you hear today. The beatles pioneered the sound of modern rock music. think of all the branches from there! metal, alternative, pop, whatever- if it weren’t for the beatles none of that would have existed. The fact that they are still famous 40 years later and that they changed the lives of millions can’t be disputed. They pioneered a new sound. Very influential I must say. What is there to say about the Beatles that hasn’t been said? They restructured pop and rock music as we know it more than once during the brief seven years that they made records. They were at the center of a pop-culture revolution that’s still resonating today. And every single one of their albums — from 1963′s debut, ‘Please Please Me,’ to 1970′s swan song, ‘Let It Be’ — is a classic.

2. BLACK CANON EOS 1200D:

True creative mastery is yours with a model that is built to impress.

Canon EOS 1200D
Canon EOS 1200D

It is every photographer’s dream to own one and every model’s dream to pose for one. I come in the latter category though, I love posing for photographs, right from the time i was a little one my father used to run behind me with the camera to capture all those silly moments i happily posed for and developed a liking towards it…I somehow transform into a completely different self when am in front of the lens being captured…those emotions, faces, landscape, portrait all i’m so passionate about. So hence, i would want to gift this one to myself so that i have a reason to smile each time am out and down.

Now, why Canon EOS 1200D? Is because The EOS 1200D now features the fully-automatic Scene Intelligent Auto mode, which would analyze the scene in front of me and automatically picking the best settings, much like the systems used by lot of digital compacts. The 1200D also offer a Creative Auto mode which would allow me to change a few key settings using the LCD screen via a simple slider system for changing the aperture and exposure compensation, or Background and Exposure as the camera refers to them.

3. BLACK WALK-IN CLOSET :

BLACK WALK-IN WARDROBE
Black Walk-in-Closet

We all like our home to look nice and organized. We like our clothes, accessories and shoes to be stored in a closet, out of sight but still easy to find. But we all have different ideas when it comes to choosing a closet style. Some people prefer walk-in closets while others enjoy the armoires more. Reach-in closets are interesting because they resemble a small portion of a walk-in closet. They include various storage solutions such as poles, drawers, compartments and open shelves. They are all combined in a way that allows you to basically neatly store everything inside without occupying much space. In a way, it could be considered a very condensed version of the walk-in closet but the walk-in-closet are the most  popular and that is my dream closet.Of course, they happen to occupy the entire room but the main advantage is the fact that i would get to store everything beautifully and won’t have to worry about space anymore.

4. BLACK BEETLE CAR :

The Beetle
The Beetle

They say when you really wish for something you can’t just stop talking about it cause sometimes that’s all that keeps running through your mind each time. The Beetle is my favourite car, born in a family with all automobile engineer’s i’ve always been travelling, reading, listening to the latest car’s and the auto car show exhibition etc around me. Infact, if my dad see’s a car from a long distance he can exactly tell you the model, the features, is it a compact or easy car, high-end or low-budget and everything that you must have not even known or heard about, yeah like literally the history of the car, his favourite would be the BMW painted in pearl white but mine is the one above in jet black…so classy it looks, i tell you. I did get a chance to go for a ride in one but having one to myself..umm havn’t been that lucky yet you know shyaa… but i do wish to embrace the speed and travel in this one to places i haven’t been. It’s also famously called the “people’s car”. The Volkswagen Beetle has been around for a number of decades, but the most recent third generation is all new. It’s offered as either a three-door hatchback or a two-door convertible that carries plenty of style and history along with it.The current Beetle is a front-engine, front-wheel drive vehicle–distinctly unlike the original rear-engine, rear-drive Beetle. The current Beetle is also based on the same architecture as that in the Golf and Jetta. Too much it’s become na? but it’s car’s what to do? Never mind am stopping…Okay next and the final on the list is…

5.BLACK SOUVENIRS

Black Souvenir's
Black Souvenir’s

We all have our own way of reminiscing the past but the best feeling is the moment right there and there is when you hold that certain souvenir in your hand. Collecting souvenirs is not a profession but merely a hobby, but I could never get over of grabbing the things that inspire the travel or journey in my life, whether it is a vacation, for work or even on at an exhibition. As years have gone by looking at that set that I bought in the other part of the earth, that is when i could conclude that i’ve had the best vacation souvenir bought in my lifetime. Typically, I can never tell whether I have already collected the best souvenir up until my dying days.  It is the natural process of life, so as am still in my prime, I collect souvenirs like woodcarvings, and  have fun identifying these items in the process, and most importantly,  I look for any soul-bewitching designs. Souvenirs bought in the place where I have gone before entails pride and priceless memories, that is why most people like me will go on different lengths of sacrifices just to bring their best souvenirs home. I wish i had a bag full of them, even the places i haven’t been too cause having them with me would want me to go there and see it for myself….I just simply love these little things in life.
